About Sophia Argyris

My earliest memories of yoga are from my childhood in Belgium. My parents had a book about yoga for children, I still remember the black and white photographs, and how I would take the book and copy the postures. However, it was only many years later that I really began my practice of yoga seriously. Before then I studied Creative Arts, and later an MA in devised and physical theatre at Goldsmith’s. Although these may seem unconnected to yoga and meditation, studying physical theatre introduced me in many ways to movement practices, and to the idea of body memory (emotional memories held in the physical body) and was really the beginning of my interest in the connection between the physical body and our emotional and mental states which led me to a deep interest in yoga philosophy and non-duality. This is a subject I am still fascinated by, and continue to learn about through my own practice, trainings, and reading.

I began my practice of Iyengar Yoga in January 2006. I had spent that New Year in Paris where I happened to see a programme about B.K.S Iyengar that inspired me to find a class when I returned home - I never looked back. This practice has brought me so many benefits, not just physically but on every level. I qualified as a teacher in 2011, and took two of the more advanced Iyengar teaching qualifications in 2016 & 2017. In that same year I made the transition to teaching full time, having previously balanced an office job alongside my growing weekly classes. Teaching, practicing and studying Iyengar Yoga is the most rewarding life-long practice, and I’m always grateful to have found this path.

After discovering Judith Blackstone’s method of embodied non-dual meditation called the Realization Process and practicing this way for some years, I trained directly with Judith to become a teacher myself. The Realization Process has deepened my sense of belonging in the world and continues to be a daily practice that enriches my life on many levels.

I am also a qualified Thai Yoga Massage practitioner, a holistic bodywork with roots in Yoga and Ayurveda. I strongly believe in the benefits of TYM for the whole being, and love sharing this wonderful healing and meditative therapy.

Aside from yoga and massage, I am also a published poet, and have a love of mantra, kirtan, and the natural world.
