Poetry of the Heart: Meditation & Poetry Writing Workshop

The more we can live from a place of connection with ourselves and our world the more our creativity can thrive.

The Realization Process is an embodied non-dual meditation practice which guides us home to our deepest selves allowing us to feel we belong in and are not separate from our world. This workshop is an invitation to explore meditation as a way to access your creative voice and poetry writing as an avenue of self expression.

The Realization Process takes us to the very centre of our experience. Poetry is a distillation to the very heart of what we want to express: in the process of seeking clarity of language and fine tuning our work, we hone down to the essential truth of what we want to share.

Both practices give space for stillness and inner listening, and provide ways to examine challenging life experiences in a safe and healing way.

Sophia creates a warm, nourishing and inspiring space to create from. The meeting of RP and poetry writing works so harmoniously. The themes and poetry she shared were universal yet personal. I truly adored my time during these sessions especially since I'm living with chronic illness and the meditation and creativity took me away from that where I found my essence waiting. I couldn't recommend this course more.

What to expect: Each session will include meditation practices and writing prompts exploring themes such as those listed below (these are examples of themes which may be covered):

Belonging : whether we seek a sense of belonging in our family & ancestral lines, in the natural world or in country and place, our experiences of belonging or not belonging are integral to our experience of the world.

Healing in times of Loss & Grief: grief and loss are universal experiences, whether the loss of loved ones, of relationships, of a way of life, a home, or grief for worldwide issues such as Climate Change. RP and writing can help us process these feelings and find our way forwards into the next stage of our life with hope and grace.

Personal & Ancestral stories: Exploring our own life experiences and/or events and stories from our family histories.

Sophia will include examples of her poetry as well as poems by various writers to illustrate the many approaches to each subject and to poetry in general. There will be time to write, and some time to share your writing if you choose to.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -

That perches in the soul -

And sings the tune without the words -

And never stops - at all

Emily Dickenson

Quotes like this one by Emily Dickenson can give us pause because they touch us deeply or seem to talk directly to us. David Whyte says “Poetry is a language against which you have no defences”. This is because poetry has a way of going straight to our hearts and in the moment it touches our heart it opens us a little more. Writing poetry lets us speak from our heart, and if we choose to share our work it can speak straight to the hearts of others.

Guided by the Realization Process meditations I believe we can all look at the world with a poet’s eyes and in doing so see and share the true depth and beauty of our human experience.

About Sophia:

I am a fully qualified Realization Process teacher and have been writing poetry since childhood. I began to write seriously in my 20s and my work has been published in various magazines, anthologies and as two short collections one of which won the Geoff Stevens Memorial Poetry Prize. The Realization Process helped re-ignite my creativity as a writer after several years of creative drought, and this led me to explore the connections between the two practices.

Who is this workshop for? Open to all, no previous experience is needed. The sessions will give space for each participant to uncover their own unique voice and the stories they have to tell. Any writing that you may choose to share with the group will be welcomed with gratitude and will not be open for feedback.
